+ America's Team Preview and Mr. Covers' SEC breakdown

Good morning everyone! Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:

🏈 Now We See

⭐️ America’s Team Preview

🚀 ...and much more! Let's get into it.

👑 Main Character

Turns out everyone was sitting on the Blind Side with this one…

Yesterday, NFL offensive lineman Michael Oher released a statement that many had not even considered to be a possibility until now. The star of ‘The Blindside’ alleges that central elements of the movie were a lie and that both Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy never actually adopted him. Additionally, he claimed that the family struck a deal that barred him from receiving ‘millions’ in royalties from the hit movie. The movie grossed more than $300 million dollars, and apparently, the Tuohys used their alleged power of conservators to funnel the money to their two birth children while Oher received nothing.

Woah.

Nothing has been officially corroborated as of yet, but to make accusations like this means something fishy has to be going on at minimum. Worst case scenario, this is all true, and this family is a whole lot worse than the world thought they were.

🗞️ In Other News…

Two more top running backs from free agency found their new homes yesterday.

Dalvin Cook is headed to the Big Apple to join up with the New York Jets on a one-year deal worth up to $8.6 million. Some are saying that the Jets are building a super team, and Snagged Sports would agree. The addition to this star back gives the offense another dimension that will allow Rodgers to feel less pressure on his shoulders.

Ezekiel Elliott will now get fed as a member of the New England Patriots with a one-year deal worth as much as $6 million. The former Cowboy will look to split the backfield with up-and-comer Rhamondre Stevenson, which is very similar situation to how things looked for Zeke in Dallas.

💰 Mr. Covers Corner

Mr. Covers has you covered when it comes to the college football landscape. Today, he’ll be breaking down the most competitive conference in all of college football (and maybe a couple of NFL conferences as well): the SEC.

Overall, I think this college football season is going to be very similar to last year's college basketball season: pure chaos. We have reached a fun point of college football where the transfer portal and NIL have taken their effects and have made a lot of good teams better. Let’s dive into it.

Georgia, the reigning national champs, have a cakewalk of a schedule compared to a lot of other top contenders. That being said, I don’t think they will end up winning the SEC Championship. I think they will get into the CFP as the 3 or 4 seed if they don’t lose to Tennessee (their only real test the entire season).

Alabama, on the other hand, has a much tougher schedule. Luckily, all of their tough matchups are at home outside of having to go to A&M. This will be a more classic Nick Saban team where there is a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball but questions at the QB position.

Tennessee has the tools to be very good again, but it all hinges on Joe Milton III at quarterback. They will go how Milton goes. The Vols have talent all over the field and on both sides of the ball, and Milton is arguably the biggest player to watch in all of CFB.

LSU has crazy talent all over the field but lacks depth in some areas. I will love taking them on a per-game basis because of how good their defense is, but I don't trust Jayden Daniels enough to back the Tigers on any futures.

From those top 4 teams, there is a noticeable drop off to teams like A&M, Ole Miss, Auburn, and South Carolina, followed by another drop off with Arkansas, Kentucky, and Florida. The rest are irrelevant.

Overall what I like the very most is Tennessee +3000 to win the CFP and +1400 to win the SEC. Taking Alabama at +600 to win the CFP is also smart largely because of that clip last year of David Pollack saying right in front of Nick Saban that Georgia runs college football now. This will be a fairly classic SEC season with the four top-heavy teams in their heavy-weight matches, and a few close games with those second-tier teams. I am also letting you know ahead of time that there will not be a number too low for the Alabama vs. LSU game; I will be hammering that under.

👀 Team Preview

Welcome to Snagged Sports’ NFL team previews! Each day leading up to the NFL regular season, we’ll cover one (maybe two) teams to get you all caught up.

Next on the list: the Dallas Cowboys

  • Last year’s record: 12-5

  • Result: NFC Divisional loss to 49ers

How ‘bout them Cowboys?!

America’s team is heading into the NFL regular season with the usual hype that has surrounded the team ever since Dak Prescott arrived on the scene. Last year, the Boys showed that they have the makings of being a serious Super Bowl contender, but will that be the case again this year?

The short answer can, and should be, yes. Dallas is returning a vast majority of its starters on both sides of the ball and has brought in new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to draw up better schemes from years past with Kellen Moore at the helm (this should not be hard to accomplish!). Dak returns healthy, and outside of the departure of Ezekiel Elliott and the addition of wide receiver Brandin Cooks, the offense will pretty much look the same.

Rookie running back Deuce Vaughn is having a moment and for now, is projected to be either the RB2 or RB3 in the depth chart behind Tony Pollard. Ceedee Lamb is looking to have a breakout year as the certified WR1 in this offense, and future hall of famer Zack Martin just signed his contract to return to the team. All very good signs.

As for the defense, Dallas somehow managed to retain defensive coordinator guru Dan Quinn to run the show that has been so successful since he took over in 2021. The d-line is going to be tough to stop with Demarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons rushing the quarterback, while Trevon Diggs and new addition Stephon Gilmore hold down the secondary as one of the best corner back duos in the NFL. The weak part of this team is the linebacker play. Leighton Vander Esch is a proven pro, but question marks surround projected starter Damone Clark and rookie DeMarvion Overshown on if they will be able to provide value at the position.

All-in-all, this Dallas team is among the firmly in the conversation as a top 3 team in the NFC, and should make the playoffs barring any serious injuries to key players.

Best Case Scenario: Super Bowl Champions

Dak has his best year yet with one of his more talented offensive groups in years, and the defense fires on all cylinders. Yes, I know, it’s always the Cowboys’ year, but who’s to say this isn’t the year?! The odds for them to win it all this year currently sit at +1500 so get in on that while you still can.

Worst Case Scenario: First round playoff exit

The Cowboys (again, barring any serious injuries), have the talent to be a playoff team at their floor. The NFC is playing the easiest its played in the last decade, with the only real competition in the conference coming from 2-3 other teams. If Dak proves to be the quarterback everyone thinks he is (lots of INTs, bad decision making, turns out it wasn’t Kellen Moore’s fault the offense stunk, etc. etc.) then this team isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
