Why Each Team Could Win

Why the Chiefs will win

Patrick Mahomes

He is the best right now and one of the best to ever do it. He is the heir to the Tom Brady throne of being that guy. It has been said by many media personalities this week, but you do not want to be the guy who bets against Mahomes and loses, it is a double loss. Mahomes has figured out how to make it work with a mediocre cast of receivers, it took him a while but he is figuring it out at the right time. Mahomes is the guy who makes you give me the constant thought “Don’t overthink it, he’s too good.”

Defense/Steve Spagnuolo

The Chief’s defense has been their saving grace for most of the year, good at worst, and best at best. Second in regular season YPG, fourth in pass YPG, second in scoring as a defense, eighth in red zone efficiency, and a plethora of more positive stats. Steve Spagnuolo knows how to time up pressure, and schemes up so well against good offense (see the last three weeks). The Chief’s defense is vulnerable to the run, but I imagine they are okay with giving up almost 200 yards in running to limit the Niner’s pass offense. Add the names of L’Jarius Sneed and Chris Jones as well to this argument. Also the classic saying, “Defense Wins Championships".

Andy Reid

Many times in games that are this close it comes down to a few coaching decisions and plays by the Quarterback. Kyle Shanahan has been in this scenario before and has had his struggles. Brock Purdy and Shanahan are a great combination, but Mahomes and Reid are arguably the best coach and QB combo in the league. Reid has been here before and has proved he has reversed his early career bad luck. He makes the right calls at the right time and is a proven winner.

Why the 49ers will win

The Names

Trent Williams, Christian McCaffery, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Dre Greenlaw, Fred Warner, Joey Bosa, and quite a few others. The Niners have the most talented roster in the league. Talent like this is pretty rare and can be a key factor in deciding close games like this is projected to be. Having the offensive talent that San Francisco has will help Brock Purdy out when he faces pressure. The talent of the Niners is undeniable and could overwhelm Kansas City.

Key Plays

This kind of bounces off of my previous point, having the talented names that the Niners have means those names step up in big plays. San Fran has the fourth-best third down offensive conversion rate this year on third and short, while Kansas City has struggled in these scenarios, ranking sixth worst. When Brock Purdy needs to convert a key 3rd and 4, then he will have the help he needs to move the sticks.

Defense

I was given some flack for saying that the Niner’s defense was overrated last week. I did not mean that the defense is bad at all. Despite what I may or may not have (but definitely did) say, their defense is better than good enough to give Patrick Mahomes some fits. They will struggle to stop the run, but they will be able to keep pressure on Mahomes in the pocket and will keep Travis Kelce limited at worst.

Final Thoughts

I will admit it was an underlying part of my write-up, but I believe the Chiefs will prevail here. This has the potential to be an all-time Super Bowl and I firmly believe it will end in a one-score game either way. The Niners have such a good and talented team, but I ultimately think that the Chiefs will be able to exploit their flaws more than the inverse. I refuse to be the guy who has a newsletter and tells you to bet against Mahomes, I won’t do it. I do believe the Chiefs will win, but also if I am wrong I am fine with being wrong while believing in the defending champs. The Blank Space on the Lombardi trophy will etch the Chief’s name.
