The Wild Wild West That Was the NBA Trade Deadline

The NBA is officially back, the biggest sports day of the year is around the corner, and NFL players get honored.

Welcome back to another edition of Snagged Sports, where we ✨snag✨ all the best stories in sports and serve them to you on a silver platter...or screen for that matter. In today's edition, the NBA is officially back, the biggest sports day of the year is around the corner, and NFL players get honored. Let's get into it.

👑 The Main Character: The NBA

ESPN

Man oh man, were Woj and Shams busy! In one of the wildest NBA Trade Deadlines in recent memory, players and picks were flying like hotcakes. Besides the big moves like KD to the Suns and Kyrie to the Mavs, there was still A LOT of movement around the league. Here are a couple of trades you might have missed:

  • Lakers move Patrick Beverly to the Orlando Magic for Mo Bamba. Yes, that Mo Bamba.

  • Raptors acquired Jakob Poeltl from San Antonio for Khem Birch, a first round pick, and two second rounders.

  • Pelicans traded Devonte' Graham and four second round picks to San Antonio.

  • In a three-team trade the Houston Rockets got John Wall, the Clippers got Eric Gordon, and the Grizzlies now have Luke Kennard.

  • Jae Crowder, after being involved in the KD trade to Brooklyn, was picked up by the Milwaukee Bucks for five second round picks.

  • D'Angelo Russell rejoined the Lakers along with Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt, sent Russell Westbrook and a first round pick to the Utah Jazz, and Minnesota picked up Mike Conley Jr. and a second round pick in another three-team trade.

  • Warriors traded James Wiseman to the Pistons for Sadiq Bey

  • Pacers acquired George Hill and a second round pick from Milwaukee

  • Knicks sent Cam Reddish and a protect first round pick to the Trail Blazers for Josh Hart

Did you get all of that? I fully don't understand how all of that happened in just over 24 hours, and there were still some that are not included in this list. Now it's time to take a deep breath, and start watching these players adapt to their new teams and form new roles. We shall learn together!

NY Mets

A Mets commercial in the Super Bowl? It's all a part of the plan.

Mets Owner, Steven Cohen, is working hard to turn his team into the biggest brand in baseball, and what better exposure is there than an ad on Super Bowl Sunday? This 30 second commercial (worth a whopping $2 million) will not only show a relatable side to its core group of players, but also create hype for a fanbase that has struggled to get their hopes up in the past.

Cohen, and the rest of the front-office, are hoping to elevate their brand past their biggest rivals in the New York Yankees, but only time will tell if this strategy will actually pay off.

🤍 Wholesome Content 🤍

Among all the NBA Trade drama, there was one reunion a certain point guard up in the Big Apple was excited about.

Jalen Brunson, who was getting his jersey retired at his alma mater, Villanova, received news that his old college teammate, Josh Hart, was joining going to be joining him in New York. His reaction was, well, wholesome.

Hart and Brunson played together for two seasons at Villanova and went 77-9 during their time together. Maybe they can spark some of that Wildcat magic over at The Garden?

💰 The Cover Corner 💰

If you were worried we weren't going to keep our guy @careercovers accountable, worry no more. Here's how he did in yesterday's picks:

✅ Northwestern vs. Ohio State u 136

❌ San Francisco vs. Gonzaga u 155.5

❌ Justin Thomas +0.5 strokes vs. Max Homa in First Round @ WM Phoenix Open

It quite literally doesn't pay to be wrong...1-2 isn't ideal, but with a big weekend ahead, this can easily be salvageable. No need to press the panic button yet. Let's recenter ourselves, and get into some of the plays for today.

🏀 CBB: Xavier -7 vs. Butler

  • There’s fading the public, and then there's making bets that aren’t smart. The few times where the public and sharp bettors are betting together should be a sign, but this is a don't over think it game. The Butler Bulldogs are simply not good enough to hang with how Xavier has been playing as of late, so as much as I love home conference dogs, give me those Musketeers.

🏀 CBB: Sienna -4 vs. Mount St. Mary's

  • Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, bet it a third time! I'm a big believer in positive and negative regression in sports. Siena has had back to back ugly losses, and MSM is coming off of an impressive road win as an 11 point underdog. I’ve bet the last two Siena games, and I will admit they have failed me. BUT I will not give up on them. Siena should be able to right the ship here.

🏈 SB LVII: Patrick Mahomes longest rush u 11.5 yards

  • This almost makes too much sense. There's his banged up ankle. There's the best pass rush defense in the league. Mahomes should be able to scramble some, but he won’t be able to move like he has been able to all season. If you're looking for some historical context, this line went under in 12 of Mahomes 19 games this year, even with a good ankle. Ship it sammy!

🏈 SB LVII: Philadelphia Eagles first half ML

  • If you’re a Philly believer, you need to go with the Eagles 1st half ML. In their 16 wins this season, they have lead at the half in 14 of them. The Eagles have been exceptional in the first half of football games this year, and expect them to be no different if you see them get out to a lead to start off the Big Game.

Do what you must with this valuable information.

🐣 Tweet of the Day 🐣

Damar Hamlin gave a touching speech surrounded by all of those who have brought him back to where he is today. Chills.

🥳 FriYAY Celebrations 🥳

The NFL's top talent gathered last night at the 2023 NFL Honors to celebrate yet another historically successful season and the players that made it happen.

  • NFL's Most Valuable Player: Patrick Mahomes - The magic man received his 2nd MVP award in six seasons in a no brainer for the league. The Chiefs are not in the Super Bowl on Sunday without him.

  • Offensive Player of the Year: Justin Jefferson - The first non-QB to make MVP noise in a while, JJettas had himself a season. If you aren't convinced, just take a look at this catch.

  • Defensive Player of the Year: Nick Bosa - This award was a toss-up for a majority of the season, but towards the end of the season where games matter the most, Bosa proved to be a problem that teams had lots of trouble solving.

  • Offensive Rookie of the Year: Garrett Wilson - Even with the constant change at quarterback, Wilson delivered with his speed and reliability. This award could have gone anywhere, but I think it ended up in the right hands (pun intended).

  • Defensive Rookie of the Year: Sauce Gardner - Another Jets rookie who is regarded as currently one of the best cornerbacks in the game. Very well deserved.

  • Comeback Player of the Year: Geno Smith - Out of nowhere, Geno decided to ball out this season. Sources have confirmed that he in fact has still not written back.

  • Coach of the Year: Brian Daboll - Taking a 4 win team with minimal changes from the previous season to the playoffs in the next is a feat many teams would love to accomplish. Hats off to the start Coach Daboll has had to begin his head coaching career.

  • Walter Payton Man of the Year: Dak Prescott - THAT'S MY QUARTERBACK. Sorry to show my bias, but now the cat is out of the bag. Prescott is an all around guy, on and off the field, and I believe one of the highest honors in all of sports was given to the right man.

And let's not forget this year's 2023 Class for the Hall of Fame. Prominent KR/PR Devin Hester will have to wait yet another year, as well as first time guys like Reggie Wayne and Andre Johnson. I have no doubt they will get their shine in due time.
