From Sea To Shining Sea
+ Mr. Covers looks to continue his hot streak this weekend
Good morning everyone! Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:
🏈 Change is Coming
💰 Reset the Market
🚀 ...and much more!
Let's get into it.
👑 Main Character
It’s officially official: college football, and college sports in the en-see-double-eh as we know it, are dead.
The ACC announced early this morning that the conference would be extending bids to California, Stanford, and SMU to grow from 15 teams into a mega-conference-like 18 teams come June 1, 2024. If you didn’t know, the ACC stands for Atlantic Coastal Conference. Last time we checked, none of the three schools joining the conference are anywhere near the Atlantic, and in fact, two-thirds of them sit directly on the Pacific, a.k.a. the other side of the country.
With the new deal in place, the ACC is expected to receive nearly $72 million in additional media rights revenue with upwards of $60 million of it being made available to the conference to distribute to its schools. Therein lies the true reason for all of this conference realignment - all that money.
What does this mean for the Pac-12, you ask? Certain doom.
With just Washington State and Oregon State left to return to the Pac-2, the conference will all but be a distant memory here in just one year’s time. They done messed up.
Now, the NCAA will be comprised of the ‘Big Four’ power conferences with the Big 12 (now sixteen), the Big 10 (now eighteen), the SEC (now sixteen), and the ACC, the newest eighteen team conference.
It’s now time to soak in all the pre-nostalgia as possible this college football season, because this will be the last time these conferences will look like this possibly ever. Change is never fun, but who knows, having USC vs. Ohio State and California vs. North Carolina becoming conference games could be a fun new wrinkle once it’s all said and done. Either way, it’s about to be the new normal, so you better get your head around it while you can.
🗞️ In Other News…
The Minnesota Vikings and TJ Hockenson came to a deal yesterday to make Hock one of the highest paid tight ends in the NFL. Excuse me, THE highest paid tight end in the NFL. The deal is reportedly a four-year deal worth $68.5 million - a $17.1 million dollar annual average. The deal will likely reset the tight end market and is something that many tight ends around the league have been waiting for.

At the age of 91 years old, the world lost a great one in Dallas Cowboys legend, Gil Brandt. Brandt made his impact known with his near 30 years of scouting expertise, with some of his knowledge still impacting the game of football today. He was a part of the evaluation process for drafting fellow Hall of Famer Roger Staubach, and great players like Herschel Walker, Drew Pearson and Everson Walls.

If you missed it last night, college football is really really back. Utah vs. Florida and Minnesota vs. Nebraska were the highlights of the night, and both Utah (blowout win) and Minnesota (walk off win) came out victorious in the end. This play alone should be enough to hype you up about six more months of the most glorious sport on earth.
💰 Mr. Covers’ Corner
✅ CFB: #14 Utah -4.5 vs. Florida
🟡 CFB: Ohio State @ Indiana Over 59 total points
🟡 CFB: Penn State -20.5 vs. West Virginia
About last night…
Look, it's Week 1 for the books too, but boy was that a horrible number. Utah took control early with their 80-yard touchdown and never looked back. Rarely will we ever see a ranked team that is that much better only have a 4.5-point spread. I look forward to enjoying backing Utah for the rest of this year.
Weekend Picks
🏈 CFB: Washington -14 vs. Boise State
Washington is simply the better team here. Returning Michael Penix Jr. behind center is enough in my opinion to back them, but if you need more reasoning, I can give that to you as well.
Retention was massive for the Huskies as they returned 75% of production on both sides, per Action Network TARP. Boise State has a few questionable spots along their interior offensive line, which won't bode well for blocking defensive tackle Tuli Letuligasenoa. This all comes back to Washington being the better team. They should be closer to 16 or 16.5. Back the Huskies
🏈 CFB: North Carolina vs. South Carolina Over 64.5 total points
Death, taxes, and North Carolina games being on crack. This one should be fun. Drake Maye and Spencer Rattler both can sling it (to their own teams and also the other). Both of these teams saw total numbers in the seventies last year, so there is no reason to think that there won't be a ridiculous amount of points in this game. Sit back and enjoy the fireworks.
🏈 CFB: LSU -135 vs. Florida State
This is easily the game of the weekend when you look at how many future NFL players are going to be in this game. Both teams returned a plethora of their offensive production and got better through recruitment and transfers. I have gone back and forth on this all week, but I have firmly landed on the Tigers. When looking at teams that are this close in talent, it ultimately comes down to coaching. This isn't the postseason so I feel comfortable backing Brian Kelly and the Tiger's moneyline.
🎒CFB season record: 3-2-0
⭐️ NFL season record: 0-0-0

Dolphins wideout Tyreek Hill will not face punishment from the NFL from the ‘marina incident’ earlier this summer.

To those of you brave enough to watch Stanford vs. Hawaii tonight, you should get a medal after watching.
Georgia ends the streak for both Alabama and Clemson, taking over the ‘odds on favorite’ to become National Champions.
