+ Mr. Covers is NOT happy with Lincoln Riley...

Good morning everyone! Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:

🏈 Week Zero
⭐️ The Lance Experiment
🚀 ...and much more! Let's get into it.

👑 Main Character

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times…football is back.

Week 0 of the college football season got things started off on the right foot, and although the games were a bit lackluster (to say the least), the satisfaction of hearing pad-on-pad contact and the call of a touchdown being returned from a kickoff (shoutout Zachariah Branch), satisfied all of our football cravings.

Some important things to note from the weekend slate:

USC looks like they are the same team from last year

After getting off to a slow start, the Trojans seemed to be in trouble against a San Jose State team who had no business being competitive in a game against a top-10 team. Luckily, USC has the best quarterback in the nation to help them get out of jams, and eventually, they did their thing, scored a bajillion points, and put the game away.

This could lead to some problems down the road if the defensive struggles aren’t ironed out quickly…I know, I know, it’s only the first game of the season, but USC had a reputation last year of only being able to outscore you. Let’s hope (or not, up to you) they can get right on defense before the bulk of Pac-12 play.

Notre Dame seems to be for real

Last season, Notre Dame and Navy went into Ireland and delivered a classic matchup for us to satisfy our palate for the start of football. This year, Notre Dame delivered a different kind of game — a beatdown.

The Fighting Irish and second year head coach Marcus Freeman were on a mission to show the college football world that they meant business, and they succeeded. Transfer QB Sam Hartman dished out four touchdowns, and the defense stifled the notorious triple option - a style of offense known to be tough on defenses. With that said, Notre Dame could be a real CFP ruiner for one of the top projected teams based on how they played this weekend.

Vanderbilt sits atop the SEC

Vanderbilt is running away with the SEC after their Week 0 win against Hawaii. They have a hold on first place, and who knows, maybe they surprise people in the coming weeks? Enjoy it while you can Commodores.

🗞️ In Other News…

It seems like it happened a while ago now, but we’re just now trying to wrap our heads around former 49ers quarterback Trey Lance getting traded to the Dallas Cowboys. After rumors were coming out that Lance was likely to stay in the Bay Area, BOOM, he appears in Dallas. Luckily for the Cowboys, it didn’t cost them three first round picks… Let the Dal-Lance era begin (not too soon though because Dak is THE guy).

Rookie quarterback and the second overall pick in this year’s draft, CJ Stroud, has officially been named QB1 to start the season down in Houston. He didn’t exactly turn heads with his play during the preseason, but the hopes down South are that giving him game time action will result in a quicker learning process. Davis Mills awaits in the wings.

As we said, football is back, and with it comes a plethora of hilarious content. Throwing any pass can be potentially dangerous for those on the field, but for this ref, it resulted in national embarrassment and probably a slight headache.

Weekend Results

Navy vs. Notre Dame Under 50.5 total points

❌ San Jose State vs. USC -30.5

✅ San Jose State vs. USC Over 66.5 total points

About this weekend…

I forgot how much Lincoln Riley and USC can make my blood pressure skyrocket. How do they not recover an onside kick? It’s one of the most ineffective plays, and even worse, it’s what led to SJSU covering. Absolutely unreal. On the other hand, Pac-12 overs are so so back. I don’t care if the number is in the hundreds! I’m taking the over every time!

Secondly, Navy is either the worst football team of all-time, or Notre Dame is for real. Hand up, I didn’t watch this game as I was helping my brother with his newborn child (not a hero, don’t call me one).

We are still warming up the brain, and luckily, that’s what Week 0 is for. I will never be upset about hitting 50%, but I can, and will, choose to be upset about Lincoln Riley.
