Main Character: Quarterbacks, Part 2
What in the world is going on in the NFL? Apparently, we live in a world where Daniel Jones gets $40M a year and nobody wants a former unanimous NFL MVP?? We need to dive into this immediately.
Daniel Jones
USA Today
Danny Dimes earned himself a 4-year $160 million dollar contract to stay with the Giants and remain their quarterback of the future. First year head coach, Brian Daboll, had lots of success with Jones in his first season, and is likely a huge reason why the front office decided to pay up to keep him around.
Even with the playoff appearance and Jones having his best season since entering the league, it is quite perplexing how and why the Giants settled on this number. After a season of throwing 15 touchdowns, rushing for 7, and ending with just over 3,200 passing yards, it seems that a reasonable number would be a bit lower than what Jones was handed.
But hey, they don't pay me to make decisions for the New York Giants, but if I were a couple of other quarterbacks around the league *cough cough, Lamar Jackson* I wouldn't settle for anything less than $50M per year. We will surely get to see how this plays out for the Giants moving forward, but it will take some time to come to terms that Daniel Jones is now paid like a top 25 player in the NFL.
Lamar Jackson

Lamar Jackson's situation is now more confusing than ever.
The Ravens placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson that will give him $32.41 million this year. That means he will have the option to discuss contracts with other teams, but the Ravens have the right to match any contract offered to Jackson before a deal is done. Sounds like what Lamar wanted right?
Well, for some reason, nobody seems to be interested in the former unanimous NFL MVP.
Teams that reportedly will *not* be pursuing a deal for Lamar Jackson include:
▫️Falcons
▫️Dolphins
▫️Panthers
▫️Commanders
▫️Raiders— Field Yates (@FieldYates)

The above listed teams should be in the market for a once-in-a-generation player, but for reasons unbeknownst to the rest of us, no one is even willing to take a meeting to see what Lamar is all about. It even has people very close and very in with the NFL world questioning what exactly is going on.

Why are all of these teams so publicly “out” on Lamar Jackson, an MVP winner in his prime at the most important position in the entire NFL?
What am I missing here?

There is no telling where this story ends for Lamar, but this guy deserves to get paid and play somewhere he can be his best self. If that's in Baltimore, so be it, but if it's elsewhere, this free agency period is sure to light a fire under him. Look out for a prime Lamar.

Merrimack completed its magical run to the NEC Championship game after winning 11 in a row and earning the one seed in its conference despite the 18-16 record. However, they won't be playing anymore basketball this season.
Due to the NCAA's transition rule, Merrimack has to wait four years after moving up to D1 to be eligible to play in any NCAA sanctioned events. Unfortunately for this team of destiny, this is their fourth and final year of non-eligibility meaning this is where the road ends for them.
While it is a bit unfair, it's apparent on the faces of these kids that this meant a whole heck of a lot, even if it didn't end in a tournament bid. Merrimack, we'll see you next year.

It was an emotional night for Lakers' fans across the country as Pau Gasol was given a jersey retirement ceremony he very much deserved. It was said by Kobe back in 2018 that he couldn't wait until he and Pau had their jerseys up in the rafters together, and to see it come to fruition, was a wonderfully emotional achievement for all parties involved.
Watch Gasol's speech here, but warning, it's a guarantee you will shed some tears.

About last night...
“The night is darkest just before the dawn” - Harvey Dent, The Dark Knight (2009)
Starting off the week 0-5 is not ideal. Starting off the week 10-22-1 over the last two days for me is even less ideal, but this just means i’m getting all of my bad picks out before the Madness begins. Cold streaks happen, but there's no choice but to keep on pushing. I’m not worried in the slightest about a bounce back! (if I go 0-2 again today I'm taking Thursday off, so yes I am a little worried)
Just to reiterate: I'm. Not. Worried.
🏒 NHL: Anaheim vs. Vancouver O 6.5
These are two of the best teams, in terms for the over, this year in hockey. I think Vancouver wins this one with 5+ goals. Anaheim on a back to back is the cherry on top. Oh, and not to mention this game finished 8-5 earlier this season, so to say I love the over at 6.5 is an understatement. Go ahead and take Vancouver -1.5 at +110 while you're at it.
🏀 NBA: Raptors vs. Clippers O 228 & Raptors +3
We're all going to have a late night with these two west coast games, but I love this matchup. Toronto is 6-4 straight up since acquiring new center, Jakob Poetl, and they are showing signs of life for a playoff push. I like the over enough to bet it, but what I really love are the Raptors +3. If you’re not going to take both, just take the Raptors +3. You can take this one to the bank.
🔮 March Madness Futures 🔮
For the next four days, Mr. Covers will be sharing his best futures for this year's Big Dance. As per usual, do what you must with this valuable information.
UConn Athletics
UConn: +2500
UConn has a very similar story to Houston, just with a better conference. A lot of minutes from an experienced starting 5 and not a whole lot of bench help.
Pros: This team is battle tested. The Big East is arguably the second toughest conference in college basketball, with their road games being among the toughest. UConn has also done something that means a lot to me: win at neutral sites. They won the Phil Knight Invitational earlier in the year, beating Oregon, Iowa State, and even potential top overall seed, Alabama. Winning on a neutral site is what March Madness is all about, and the Huskies have proven that they are more than able of doing that already. The Huskies are 4th in overall adjusted efficiency, 10th in offensive adjusted efficiency, and 12th in defensive adjusted efficiency. UConn is a good team that is playing their best basketball right now.
Cons: UConn and Houston have the same issues of depth and dependency on their starting 5. Starters for the Huskies are averaging 26-29 minutes per game with the next four bench players playing just 13-17 minutes per game. I sure hope they have a Theragun ready for those starters if they do end up making a deep run. Depth is not quite as important in college basketball as it is in the NBA, but if the Huskies find themselves in early foul trouble, they could be in some trouble. Lastly, UConn has the certain unfortunate ability to just fall flat at times. There have been multiple games this year where the Huskies are shooting sub 30% from three. They aren’t quite “live by the three die by the three,” but it is still concerning nonetheless.
🐣 Tweet of the Day 🐣
Anyone who thinks I have time to come back to the NFL has never adopted a 2 month old kitten for their daughter.

Tom Brady will fully retire one day, but until then, there is nothing he can say for the next 10 years that will convince me he's done. And no, I'm not kitten around.
🤔 What If Wednesday 🤔
The Players Championship starts up tomorrow in what many consider to be the 5th major tournament in golf. Golf is always so unpredictable, but that's what makes it so compelling. Expect there to be lots of shifting at the top of the leaderboard, but what if...
🦘 Cam Smith makes an appearance. The current defending champion of the Players is now ineligible to compete due to his association to the LIV Tour. However, Cam Smith lives just miles away from TPC Sawgrass, and as far as I know, there isn't a rule saying he can't just show up and watch the action from behind the ropes. It would be the ultimate stand-off, and if Smith does decide to show up, expect there to be fireworks on the course like we haven't seen before.
🏆 Rickie Fowler wins. It's hard not to root for the comeback of Rickie Fowler. He hasn't won in a long, long time, but as of late, he has shown flashes of what golf fans everywhere thought he was capable of. Rickie infamously won the Players back in 2015 in an incredible playoff on the floating 17th green, and to do it again would put him amongst two-time winners Tiger and Jack Nicklaus as the kings of TPC Sawgrass.
😬 Jon Rahm finishes outside the top 10. Don't get me wrong, Jon Rahm is one of the best players in the world right now, but after such a disappointing performance in last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational, you have to wonder if the pressure is getting to him. Yes, he's won multiple times already this season, but the real season starts now. If Rahm can't put something together this week, it might be someone else's turn to shine during this 2023 PGA season.
