+ Mr. Covers breaks down his picks going forward

Good morning everyone! Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:

🏈 All Aboard
🐶 Surprising Upsets
🚀 ...and much more!

Let's get into it.

👑 Main Character

Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffalo need to be on primetime television from here on out. They are, what some may refer to as, an electric factory.

The team up in Boulder, CO put the world on notice this past full college football Saturday after upsetting the national champion runner-ups TCU Horned Frogs in a 45-42 shootout - solidifying themselves as officially ‘for real’.

Many doubted the program from the jump, especially after importing a record 71 players this season. Coach Prime warned us all with his now infamous ‘we coming’, and boy did they. Shedeur Sanders, Deion’s son and quarterback of the Buffalo, put up a school-record 510 passing yards with 4 passing touchdowns. Four different receivers put up 100+ receiving yard games - don’t quote me on it, but I think that’s pretty good.

Former 5-star all around athlete Travis Hunter was one of those receivers who racked up over 100 yards, but Hunter, who also plays on the defensive side of the ball, got himself an extra reception from TCU’s quarterback in one of the plays of the weekend.

The two Colorado stars have slid into the Heisman voters minds after their performances, but like everything else in sports, many can be quick to overreact. I have no doubt that Colorado is must-see TV from here on out, but many many people doubted Coach Prime and the Buffalo before this, and many (but less many) will continue to do so the rest of the season.

For now, the hype train is getting more full by the second, so hop on for the ride while you still can.

🗞️ In Other News…

A couple of teams this weekend pulled off upsets to start the college football season, but none more notable than last’s nights win for the Duke Blue Devils against Clemson. Turns out if you can’t put the ball in the endzone, you can’t win games, and Duke capitalized on the Tigers’ inability to get-six within the redzone. Duke may have just become a football school right before our very eyes.

We would be remiss if we didn’t at least mention Texas State’s and Wyoming’s wins on Saturday. Knocking off Big 12 schools in Baylor and Texas Tech only solidifies the notion that the conference is a wild wild west of opportunity for those who are looking to make some noise as a smaller, lesser known, program.

Cooper Kupp continues to attempt to battle back from a lingering hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined now for more games than he would probably like to admit. He is still seeing specialists to try to reach full health before the NFL season kicks off this weekend (I can’t believe I just typed that sentence I’m so excited), but head coach Sean McVay has indicated that he should be all systems go come kickoff.

Just when everyone thought Alabama didn’t have an elite quarterback to lean on, in comes a performance that has never been done by a Bama QB in the history of the program. Granted, it was against Middle Tennessee State, but nonetheless, Jalen Milroe scored two rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns for the Crimson Tide this Saturday, a first for Alabama football. With LSU going down this weekend, maybe Alabama isn’t as far off from returning to the throne of the SEC as we all thought they were.

💰 Mr. Covers’ Corner

❌ Ohio State @ Indiana Over 59 total points

✅ Penn State -20.5 vs. West Virginia

✅ Washington -14 vs. Boise State

❌ North Carolina vs. South Carolina Over 64.5 total points

❌ LSU -135 vs. Florida State

About last weekend…

I would like to start off by saying that if I ever choose to back LSU’s Brian Kelly in a big game again, each and every one of you has the right to punch me straight in the face. He’s the Rick Barnes of college football: will always have a good team but can never win the big one.

Next, both the Ohio State game and the South Carolina games were just weird. Chalk those up to first game of the season I guess.

Now, the bell of the ball: Penn State’s MIRACULOUS cover. I had accepted that this wasn’t going to cover and stopped following it at dinner, and then all of a sudden, I got the notification that Penn State kept the pedal to the metal and scored with 6 seconds left to cover. What a game.

Lastly, Washington might be real. Hell the whole Pac-12 might be for real. What a crazy world that would be.

Going Forward

The format for the NFL this year will be as follows:

  • Monday I will talk about the weekend games and give out picks for MNF.

  • Tuesday I will talk about MNF and what games I'm looking at for the entire week.

  • Wednesday will be the same in terms of what games I LIKE but not necessarily games I have placed wagers on (when I place a wager, y'all will know).

  • Thursday I will be giving any official TNF picks that I haven't given out already.

  • Friday will be final picks for the weekend and will include college football as well.

Get it? Got it? Good. Let’s dive in.

Monday’s Picks

🏈 NFL: Lions vs. Chiefs O 54.5 total points

First of all, this is just a fun pick and, I have to admit, is part of the reason I'm taking it. But never fear, I have a stat you might like. Season opening overs are 5-0 in the Patrick Mahomes era, so take that as you will. The Lions made improvements this offseason on offense and minor changes on defense, but not enough as they were one of the worst defenses in the league last year. The Chiefs are looking to be without star DT Chris Jones as well. All that to say - points are inevitable. The first game of the year and we are taking an over; we are so back.

👀 Looking ahead: Lions +6.5

I have already taken the over in this game, and I really want to take the Lions +6.5, but going against Patrick Mahomes at home is a scary thing. I'm worried about just how big this Lions hype has gotten. Even with the hype, I think it should be closer to 4 points. I need a bit more time to convince myself, but I will likely be taking the points. Stay tuned.

🎒CFB season record: 5-5-0
