NBA Playoff Preview feat. Mr. Covers

The Playoffs from the POV of a Bettor

Given how top heavy the NBA has been this year, there is not a whole lot of value at this point in the year. However, with less parody comes more responsible betting. I would be shocked if one of the top 3 seeds did not make it out of the Eastern Conference. The favorites in the Western Conference are the 4, 5, and 6 seeds. This could be a very weird year, but I am letting you know that by no means am I an NBA expert, nor do I claim to be.

These are my picks, and as you know, do with this information as you will.

🔮 Mr. Cover's NBA Futures 🔮

Bucks +250

The Bucks have two legitimate DPOY candidates in Giannis and Brook Lopez, not to mention Jrue Holliday being an exceptional defender as well. Speaking of Giannis, what a special player he is. Averaging 31 PPG, 11.9 RPG, and almost 6 assists, and he is somehow only third in MVP voting. The Bucks have defense, experience and are 4th in the league with about 15 made three pointers per game. Khris Middleton’s return from injury has been positive; he's not quite where he was before, but he really doesn't need to be where he was in 2021 when the Bucks won the championship.

Picking the odds-on favorite is never the sexy pick, but I legitimately do not have a reason to not like the Bucks other than the fact Mike Budenholzer looks funny.

Suns +460/Western Conference Champions +190

The Suns have not lost when Kevin Durant is in the lineup with a perfect 8-0 record. Devin Booker is playing amazing, scoring 27 a night. Deandre Ayton and Christ Paul have altered their roles and are complimenting their superstar counterparts. The Suns have also been to the Finals before, and Monty Williams is a top 5 coach in the league. It all adds up to success right?

The Suns big issue will be the health of their team. Kevin Durant has been battling injuries all year, as well as Ayton and Booker, and Chris Paul is old and has a history of injuries in the playoffs. I think the safer pick is to just take the Suns to win the Western Conference, given the injury history, but I wouldn't be surprised seeing KD and the rest of Phoenix hosting the trophy at the end of this thing.

Sixers +900

The Doc Rivers factor makes me not want to type this out more than anything. However, Joel Embiid is having one of the most dominant years we have seen for a big man, and I don’t see him slowing down. James Harden has evolved into more of a facilitator, Tyrese Maxey is a special young player that can get to the hoop whenever he wants, and Tobias Harris has started to fit his complimentary role very well.

My concerns are health and the overall rigidity of the Eastern Conference, but to me, it's a risk that has a pretty good payout should things go the way Philly wants them to. Brooklyn in the first round is a feisty matchup, followed by (most likely) the Celtics, then the Bucks. Woof. However, backing the future MVP is not a bad idea.

🔮 First Round Predictions 🔮

  •  MY Knicks over the Cavs in the first round

  • Warriors over the Kings in the first round

  • Minnesota ATS vs the Nuggets in the first round

  • Nets ATS vs the Sixers first round

  • Thunder ATS in the Play-In

The WNBA Draft kicked off with 2022 Naismith Player of the Year, Aliyah Boston, going No. 1 overall to the Indiana Fever and ended up Mrs. Irrelevant, Brittany Davis, going to the Aces as pick number 36.

South Carolina ended the night having 5 of its players drafted, the fourth time that a team has had at least five of its players selected in a single draft.

"Just the way that we compete and the way that we work," Boston said in describing what led to the Gamecocks' draft domination. "I think we have all just put in a lot of work. ... For us all to be at this draft is just something that's really special."

Now Boston will go to work to try and bring the Fever their third title in team history.

Like many of you, the WNBA is not usually a sport that appears on my radar, but women's sports has been on fire recently and has clearly shown they can garner the same amount of attention and excitement as men's sports.

Monday's Results

✅ Stars -185 @ Red Wings / Over 6

❌ Coyotes +1.5 vs Kraken

❌ Islanders -160 @ Washington

About last night...

Don’t get me started on the Islanders, I should’ve known. It's April and it's not the 1970’s so don’t trust the Islanders. Giving up 2 goals in the first 3 minutes of play is not the best way to start a hockey game. In lighter news, the Stars, MY Stars, are absolutely buzzing offensively. I am excited to watch these Stars in the playoffs this year, and there should be a lot of close games. Also, I really liked the Coyotes chances but clearly they fell apart at the end.

🏒 NHL: Buffalo vs. NJ O 7 goals

Mr. Editor: please make sure that this is the first pick given out. My analysis may be more lengthy than normal, but this NHL slate has me so excited for the playoffs because there are so many good games (and bad games, which I am a sicko and I love), and I might have 50 bets (call 1-800-GAMBLER if you have a problem). This total hit 9 last matchup, New Jersey is 7-2-1 on overs in their last 10. Buffalo can be feast or famine at times, but I think both teams will be on fire. This will be a fun game. If you don’t like 7 then take the over on NJ goals (likely 3.5)

🏒 NHL: Leafs +105 vs. Tampa Bay

I am going to zig while everyone else zags here because both games between these two teams this year have favored the home team. However, I think the Leafs get it done here. This is already a locked in playoff matchup and I could not be more excited for the Leafs to win their first playoff series in almost 20 years. They will start that momentum here in Tampa.

🏒 NHL: Bruins -1.5 vs. Washington

The Islanders let me down last night against the Caps, but I have faith that the best team in the history of hockey will absolutely obliterate the Caps here. I love Bruins ML, I love Bruins -1.5, I love over 6.5, I love Bruins over 3.5 team goals. Give me the Bruins to set the NHL points record in every way, shape and form.

🏒 NHL: Blackhawks vs. Penguins over 6.5

This game is for sickos, so I will be enjoying it. The Penguins can score and can also let up a ton of goals. 5-3 Penguins

🏒 NHL: Golden Nights -145 vs. Kraken

Well rested home team versus a team that is still playing when I am typing this out the night before; we have faired well with this trend. Vegas is the better team and should win this one. I haven’t seen the Vegas in-regulation line yet but I'll be taking that as well. I'm tempted to make this a 'Game of the Year', that’s how much I love the Golden Knights in this spot.

🏒 NHL: Avalanche vs. Oilers regulation draw / U 6.5

I couldn’t decide on a ML pick here so I’m going with the total and the regulation draw. Should be a close game and I see it ending 3-2. Not sure what the line is on the draw, but I love it more than the under so if you are picking one take the regulation draw.

🏀 NBA: Hawks vs. Heat under 226.5

Just feels right. Sharps are on it, I’m on it. I just like this number for “playoff” basketball, whatever that means. Not much analysis here, just a gut feeling.

As per usual, do you what you must with this valuable information.

🐣 Tweet of the Day 🐣

It seems like every year we go back and forth on which QB will be selected first out of each class, and this year is no different. With the Panthers now holding the first pick, and very clearly planning to take a QB, it seems it's a two man race between Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's CJ Stroud.

As early as last week Stroud was the odds on favorite, but reports are swirling that it is Young is now the pick the Panthers are eyeing. Whatever happens, there's sure to be debate, and you can be sure we'll be covering it all!
