New Era NFL

+ Kelce goes down and the newest AP Poll is out

Good morning everyone! Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:

🏈 The New Era
🤔 What To Do
🚀 ...and much more!

Let's get into it.

👑 Main Character

The NFL landscape over the past couple of years have completely flipped on its head.

The reality of football is that your favorite players can’t play forever, but more recently, the game’s biggest stars have headed off into the sunset of their NFL careers, leaving room for the next generation of players to make their mark.

Mr. Covers let me know earlier this week that heading into the 2023-24 NFL season, only four quarterbacks have won a Super Bowl. Those QBs are:

  • Patrick Mahomes (2)

  • Matthew Stafford (1)

  • Russell Wilson (1)

  • Aaron Rodgers (1)

As you can see by this shockingly short list, the league is wide open to the possibility of a new quarterback winning The Big One each year for the next decade. The old era of the NFL has passed away with Brady, Manning(s), Roethlisberger, and Brees all moving on in their own right.

Now, I know it’s been a minute since these guys have retired to go on to bigger and better things, but it’s crazy to think that this season is the first without any of the aforementioned guys since 1998 - nearly 25 years ago.

The league has not been this wide open since then, and it’s time for the next set of QBs to establish their spot as the game’s best. We all know Mahomes is on the fast track to become one of the greats, but if we were to take a step back and look at the quarterback landscape at a distance, there are a solid 10 guys that could make a run at a Super Bowl in the next 5 years. Fine, we’ll name them since everyone loves a good list of players.

  • Josh Allen

  • Joe Burrow

  • Lamar Jackson

  • Dak Prescott (please, pretty please)

  • Justin Herbert

  • Trevor Lawrence

  • Jalen Hurts

  • Tua Tagovailoa

  • Brock Purdy

  • Justin Fields

Keep in mind, I did say five years, so give me some slack on some of those guys, but these 10 are some of the quarterbacks that have a real chance to join the ranks of Brady and Manning if they play their cards right.

The parody of the NFL has gone up significantly in the past two to three years, and personally, I’m here for it. Switching things up year to year and having different stars emerge are what this game is so good at doing, so let’s let it do it’s thing.

Hopefully this year, for mine and Mr. Covers’ sake, the Boys can finally bring one home to Dallas. If not, that’s ok (it’s not), but watching the future shape out before our very eyes will be a good consolation prize.

🗞️ In Other News…

Give me ‘News No One Wants to Hear’ for 200, Alex.

Travis Kelce is arguably one of the most well-liked players in the league, regardless of team affiliation, so hearing the news yesterday of his hyperextended knee did not sit well with much of the NFL world. Luckily, it seems like he’s avoided a serious injury, but it’s unlikely that he will be ready for the season opener tomorrow night vs. the Lions.

The College Football Playoff rankings down come out for another eight weeks, so for now, we’ll have to take the AP Poll for its word. After the dust settled on Week 1 in college football, a new Top 25 emerged, including Florida State cracking the No. 4 spot, Duke and Colorado joined the party at No. 21 and 22 respectively, and LSU and Clemson slid down, but not out, of the Top 25.

HBO’s Hard Knocks featuring the New York Jets has come to a close, and with it signifies the start to the NFL season. Fine by us. While I’m sure many chose to tune in to jump on the hype train or watch some of the behind the scenes action, we’re here to bring you some wholesome content. What a great way to cap off the series.

💰 Mr. Covers’ Corner

🟡 Lions vs. Chiefs O 54.5 total points

🟡 Lions +6

Wednesday’s Picks

🏈 NFL: Holding on Lions vs Chiefs O 54.5 total points & Lions +6

I want it on the record that I was (kind of) right about one part of this game and probably really wrong on the other part.

Last season, I asked Mr. Editor which non-quarterback would have the greatest effect on a favored team line; Travis Kelce is definitely up there on that list. Without Kelce and likely Kadarius Toney, the Chiefs will be trotting out quite a mediocre list of wide receivers. I don’t have a lot of faith in the Chiefs covering, much less winning, without Kelce or Toney in this lineup.

Lastly, hear me out: I love the over even more. I really thought about taking the under 53.5, but as soon as I do that, they middle it at 54 and I lose both bets. Mahomes will be spreading the ball out even more than before the Kelce injury; he will be taking safe dump-offs to wide receivers who will be taking full advantage of the Lion's horrible linebackers. I think the Lions can explode for over 30 points which means we just need three touchdowns and a field goal from the Chiefs. Sounds easy enough to me. I was able to grab the Lions at 6.5 right after the news broke, but anything 5 and above is great value.

Going Forward

As a reminder, here is the format for the NFL this year will be as follows:

  • Monday I will talk about the weekend games and give out picks for MNF.

  • Tuesday I will talk about MNF and what games I'm looking at for the entire week.

  • Wednesday will be the same in terms of what games I LIKE but not necessarily games I have placed wagers on (when I place a wager, y'all will know).

  • Thursday I will be giving any official TNF picks that I haven't given out already.

  • Friday will be final picks for the weekend and will include college football as well.

Get it? Got it? Good.
