MaGOAT and the Chiefs Win Super Bowl LVII

Catching up from a wild weekend of sports

Welcome back to another edition of Snagged Sports, where we ✨snag✨ all the best stories in sports and serve them to you on a screen near you. In today's edition, we're recapping everything Super Bowl LVII. Let's get into it.

πŸ† The Main Character: The Kansas City Chiefs

NFL

To put it simply, Super Bowl LVII did not disappoint. With as much hype coming into the game as there was, this game delivered. The key to any good Super Bowl consists of lots of scoring, off and on the field drama, and controversy. Every one of those boxes were checked last night.

MVPatrick Mahomes

Many were questioning the health of Mahomes' ankle coming into the game, but he quickly put all doubters to rest. He averaged 7.3 yards per rush and made a crucial first down late in the game for 26 yards. He didn't have the most gaudy numbers on the night, finishing 21/27 with 182 yards, but his 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions sealed the deal for the Chiefs.

When it came down to it, the best player on the field played exactly how he needed to in order to ✨snag✨ his second Lombardi AND Pete Rozelle trophy in four years. Very very well deserved.

Major Props to Hurts

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts did everything in his power to will his team to a Super Bowl win, but came up just short in his first appearance. He threw for a cool 304 yards and 1 touchdown, and was his team's leading rusher with 70 yards and not one...not two...but three rushing touchdowns which tied the record for the most in Super Bowl history with Terrell Davis.

Bleacher Report

It was one of those performances where you could make the argument that a losing player deserved the game's most valuable player honors, but it wasn't meant to be. Jalen Hurts proved he is that guy and deserves to be regarded as one of the more valuable QB's in the league, trophy or not. Certified dawg.

Come for the Football, Stay for the Rihanna Concert

There was much anticipation for Rihanna's first major public performance since 2016, and by all accounts, she did not disappoint. Hit after hit, she went with no features, and no one could have cared less. Want to rewatch her performance? No worries, I got you!

Caution: Field May Cause Slipping

The NFL spent reportedly $800,000 on the grass used for last night's Big Game. It's a new breed of grass that was produced at a local farm near Phoenix that can supposedly reduce the wear and tear that takes place on the field and recovers better than the usual concoction of grass on other NFL fields.

Safe to say, fans, and I'm sure players, HATED the grass, and it wasn't long before the broadcast team, and the rest of America, started to roast ol' Roger Goodell and the NFL for its new and "improved" grass.

These type of field conditions simply cannot happen when everyone is watching the biggest game of the year with the most critical eyes. Many players, for the entirety of the season, have petitioned for grass fields, but this might deter them from engaging in any future conversations on the matter.

Nothing like disrupting the flow of the game by replacing cleats every drive!

And now, an accurate depiction of what the field conditions were like (mind you, with no rain whatsoever):

Luckily, there wasn't that one pivotal play everyone was expecting the field to greatly impact, but after this kind of public response, the NFL needs to go back to the drawing board.

Refs (Kind of) Dodge Controversy

NFL referees have been at the center of attention throughout the playoffs, and with just under two minutes left to go in the game they were back at it again. They called a defensive holding penalty on Eagles' DB, James Bradberry, giving the Chiefs a crucial first down. This eventually lead to the Chiefs running the clock down to just 11 seconds left and kicking the game-winning field goal.

Of course, the reaction was not good to say the least. Making such a game changing decision in the biggest game of the season, on the league's biggest stage, people were bound to have their opinions.

But in a stunning, and somewhat relieving statement, Bradberry commented after the game saying that "it was a holding". Refs everywhere took a collective sigh of relief.

I don't blame the guy. He was trying to make a play and prevent a late score that would have been pinned on him. The game is already hard enough, and having to play to the pleasure of the officiating crew should not be part of the game. I'm just thankful they got this one right.

So Long Football

The Super Bowl is always a bittersweet day. On one hand, it's a celebration of football that provides the best matchup of the season. On the other hand, it marks the end of not only the NFL season, but football season as a whole.

Yes there's the USFL and XFL coming up shortly, but it just doesn't feel the same. Or maybe it will. I can't decide. I might dive into these at a late date, but we'll have to see. Anyways, I digress.

I'm just glad that we got to cherish one last night of real football. Now who do I need to contact to make Super Bowl Monday an official holiday?

πŸ’° The Cover Corner πŸ’°

If you were worried we weren't going to keep our guy @careercovers accountable, worry no more. Here's how he fared this weekend:

❌ Xavier -7 vs. Butler

βœ… Sienna -4 vs. Mt. Saint Mary's

❌ Patrick Mahomes longest rush U 11.5 yards

βœ… Philadelphia Eagles first half ML

Hey, as far as betting goes, two out of four ain't bad. I could have performed better, yes, but for the amount of action available this weekend, .500 is just fine with me. Let's see if today I can get you some net profit.

πŸ’ NHL: Detroit vs. Vancouver O 6.5 goals

  • This is one of those plays where I go back to my trusty method that rarely fails me: Keep-It-Simple-Stupid. Both of these teams are, at BEST, middle of the pack. They have solid offensive fire power, but defense isn't a strong point in either of these squads. Vancouver especially gives out goals like I give myself insulin shots (T1 diabetics represent). Don’t overthink it here. K.I.S.S.

πŸ€ CBB: Miami +4.5 vs. UNC

  • Again I say, fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice? Strike three. I'm going against a home conference dog here, but North Carolina has looked atrocious this year in almost every aspect of the game. They have not lived up to their hype, and there is really no reason to back them as a favorite here. Hell, take Miami ML too while you're at it at +160.

🏈 About Last Night...

  • Everyone knew the Eagles would come out strong in the first half. They have all year, and there was no reason to doubt as it was an almost stress free bet. You're welcome.

  • On the other hand, I will see Mahomes limping off the field before the half every time I blink for at least the next week. I really thought the under was a lock after his ankle was seemingly twisted again, but low and behold, Mr. MVP scampered for 14 yards in the third quarter to send the longest rush prop over. If I had to do it again, I still would. It's just one of those unlucky plays where even the numbers don’t win. Anyways, 'til next season. Goodbye football!

As per usual, do what you must with this valuable information.

🐣 Tweet of the Super Bowl 🐣

Bad Girl Riri did her thing wayyyy up in the rafters of State Farm Stadium, and it seems like a lot of people had the same idea when it came to this wide-angle shot...

πŸ€‘ M(oney)day πŸ€‘

Nothing like starting off the week with your pockets feeling a bit heavier. Check out some of these insane hits from a great weekend of betting!

  • This guy is maybe the LAST person who needs a winning bet, but low and behold, a cool 1.47 M's will hit his account come tomorrow morning. I guess it really is just he, himself, and all his millions.

  • I don't know who you are D Murph, but watch out @careercovers, this man might be coming for your job.

  • Are we sure this isn't a Biff from Back to the Future situation? What a way to end the NFL season on a high note.
