The Longest Day In Golf

The Deal Heard ‘Round The World, Sad Day Bad Day, and much more!

Good morning everyone! Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the sports world today:

⛳️ The Deal Heard ‘Round The World

😢 Sad Day Bad Day

🚀 ...and much more! Let's get into it.

👑 Main Character

Yesterday, a bombshell the likes we haven’t seen in a long while (maybe ever?) was dropped onto the world of golf, and we’re still trying to uncover all the dirty deets.

In a shocking announcement, around 9:00am CT, a merger between the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour to become one singular entity was official, and approximately 5 people knew the deal was settled before the rest of the world found out. As you can probably guess, the reaction from the PGA’s players were not exactly the nicest since the PGA failed to inform them of any such deal before hand.

From what we know, the deal was kept ultra-secret, and was primarily driven from sources close to the PGA, not the PGA themselves. Additionally, the deal is with the Personal Investment Fund (PIF), which is controlled by the Saudis and will be the primary investor in the PGA going forward. The PGA Tour CEO, Jay Monahan, gets to keep his seat as CEO (for now), and Yasir Al-Rumayyan will become the chairman of the newly created PGA/LIV/DP Golf entity.

The rest of the 2023 season will be played as normal for all tours involved in the deal, but as soon as its over, there will be lots of shifting to be done to events, schedules, player eligibility, and who knows what else.

For fans of golf, it is an overall net-positive. More money will be poured into the game, all the best players in the world back together, and it will make an overall better product as a result. For PGA players faithful to the league, you can imagine the frustration and anger of remaining loyal only to be joined with the league they swore to never join in the first place. Here is a list of some of the figures big name PGA Tour players turned down to join the “rival” LIV Golf league:

Tiger Woods: $800 million

Jon Rahm: $400 million

Rory McIlroy: $400 million

Hideki Matsuyama: $300 million

Will Zalatoris: $150 million

Just ABSURD money. Now, the guys that took the LIV money like Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, and Dustin Johnson, among others, just one year ago will be allowed back into all events, only millions of dollars richer. Not saying one way or another is a bad thing, but it’s a baaaaad look for the PGA who guilted its players morally and financially to stay loyal to a league that ultimately took the money anyways.

Like we mentioned earlier, in the end, the product of professional golf will improve with the deal, but the way the PGA went about things is going to be a tough sell for players to come to terms with. Down the road, things will (probably?) smooth over, but for now, the way golf operates has changed forever, and we will get a front row seat to see how it all shakes out.

🐣 Tweet of the Day

In an emotional interview, the Texas Rangers newest pitcher and former Cy Young winner, Jacob deGrom announced to the world that he would need season-ending Tommy John surgery. A tough break as it will be his second time to undergo the procedure. You never want to see this happen in sports, and as it is shaping up, deGrom is having a ‘what if’ career before our very eyes.

Tuesday’s Results:

✅ Rangers -150 vs. Cardinals

❌ Pirates -1.5 vs. Oakland

Rays -178 vs. Twins / NRFI

About last night...

The only way I could be seeing the board more clearly is if I could figure out when to bet on the A’s because they turn into the 1927 Yankee’s when I bet against them. Other than that I am on fire. The favorites are winning, and I am going to keep on trusting my model (my brain).

⚾️ MLB: Marlins -180 vs. Royals

Jordan Lyles is 0-9 on the year, and the Royals are 0-12 in games he starts. The Marlins are an above average team that are definitely better than the Royals and have won 8 of their last 10 games. Rule #1 in betting baseball: bet on the better team. It seems like a given but not all sports bets can be that simple so just trust me on this one.

⚾️ MLB: Rangers vs. Cardinals Under 5 F5 total

In Jack Flaherty’s last 5 starts he has let in 1, 1, 3, 0, and 3 runs. This season Jon Gray has not let in more than 4 runs and has gone for 0, 1, 1, 0, and 1 runs. My computer thought I was typing in code, but no, it’s just Jon Gray’s earned runs. This game should be relatively disgusting early on, so this is for all the baseball sickos out there that want to watch 8 combined batters in a whole inning. Have fun.

⚾️ MLB: Pirates -1.5 vs. A’s

This is a gut pick. Nuts on the line. Never give up on betting against an awful team, do you hear me? Never. The A’s are terrible and just won 11-2; bob meet weave, zig meet zag, yin meet yang. If the A’s win this, I will have to retire (in the short term) on betting against them.
