Keeping Up With Jones
+ the Niners have made a decision at quarterback
Good morning everyone! Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:
🏈 All About The Money
📉 Downward Trends
🚀 ...and much more! Let's get into it.
👑 Main Character
Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones has notified the team that he is willing to wait until as far out as Week 8 if that’s what it takes to reach a new contract agreement. The NFL’s No. 10 player according to the Top 100 list is clearly one of the key pieces to the Chiefs’ defense. Without him, the defensive line thins out fast.
Teammates of Jones have come to his defense, notably quarterback Patrick Mahomes, saying that he is one of the leaders of the team, and that “things get tricky when you’re trying to get money for you and your family.”
Although he is such an important part of what was an incredible Super Bowl team last year, with Mahomes’ contract taking up what it is in the team’s cap, many are saying that the Chiefs simply can’t afford to offer a contract as big as the one Jones is asking for, and still have room for other top talent around the field. A.k.a. winning another Super Bowl with the kind of money Jones wants might be impossible.
Time will tell whether or not the two parties will be able to come to a mutual agreement, but without the team’s best defensive player on the field, the chances of winning go down significantly, even if Mahomes is your QB…
🗞️ In Other News…
Trey Lance was told by head coach Kyle Shanahan that he will be backing up the back up at the start of the 2023 NFL season. The 49ers quarterback room now looks like:
1.) Brock Purdy
2.) Sam Darnold
3.) Trey Lance
Not exactly what you want to see from the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, especially considering what they gave up to move just a couple of spots up in that draft.
Trust me, I’m not even a Colts fan and I’m already getting sick and tired about this whole situation.
The Colts informed their star running back, Jonathan Taylor, that he has until August 29th to seek a trade. The top suitors remain the same (and were spot on as reported on by Snagged Sports) with Miami, Philly and Chicago still firmly in the running to land #28.
💰 Mr. Covers’ Corner
🟡 Navy +20.5 vs. Notre Dame
🟡 Navy vs. Notre Dame Under 50.5 total points
As a reminder, since its been a hot minute from the last bet we’ve tracked. Green check mark = winning bet; red ‘x’ = losing bet; yellow circle = bet in progress. We’ll be keeping with up Mr. Covers’ record going forward, so no pressure Covers!
Now that we’re all up to date on the latest Snagged Sports lingo, let’s dive back into some college football action.
🏈 CFB: San Jose State vs. USC -30.5 / Over 66.5 total points
Listen, I don't love taking a favorite, let alone a 30-point favorite, but, here we are.
USC was one of the better teams last year and went 2-0 ATS on spreads of 30 or more points last year. However, they were only 4-3 ATS when the spread was double digits. Not great, but I choose to only focus on the first stat listed.
I have far too much belief in both the Trojan offense (leading with Caleb Williams) and Lincoln Riley's ability to run up the score. Fight on and score points, that’s what I always say. This over looks juicy with the USC offense fully capable of coving that number by themselves. Also, the Trojan defense is good, but also a little swiss cheese-like. San Jose State should be able to find some points to drive that total above our desired threshhold.
Football is, again, all the way back.
