A Jam-Packed Weekend of Sports

NBA All-Star weekend, the launch of the XFL, and the last of Kevin Love in a Cavs jersey

Welcome back to another edition of Snagged Sports, where we ✨snag✨ all the best stories in sports and serve them to you on a screen near you. In today's edition, the weekend is packed with all sorts of action, the last of The Land's championship team is likely gone, and Tiger looks like he's baaaaack. Let's get into it.

πŸ† The Main Character: The Weekend

No, we're not talking about the musician. This upcoming sports weekend is jam packed with sports from Friday morning to Sunday night. It's the things fans dream of, regardless of sport.

I can't tell you what to watch, but we'll break down what all you can tune into and what you can hope to expect from a wonderful weekend of sports

NBA All-Star Weekend

Salt Lake City will become the epicenter of basketball for the next three days. The NBA world will gather to take part in an eventful weekend of basketball, and there isn't going be a moment to miss. With that said, there's really only a couple of events basketball fans care about. Let's see if I can get this right.

The Slam Dunk Contest

If we're being honest with ourselves, the NBA has failed to put together a decent slam dunk competition since the bar-setting 2016 contest between Aaron Gordon and Zach Lavine. If you've never seen said contest, may I advise you clear your calendar for the next 12 minutes to watch this video and witness the peak of athleticism and energy on a basketball court.

This year's participants are:

  • Kenyon Martin Jr., Houston Rockets

  • Mac McClung, Philadelphia 76ers

  • Trey Murphy III, New Orleans Pelicans

  • Jericho Sims, New York Knicks

Tell me they aren't serious?! McClung brings a little spark to the group with his widely popular high school mixtapes, but other than that, this might as well be 4 random guys from a pickup game off the street. Hopefully I'm proved wrong, but this one is going to be another stinker. Do better NBA.

The 3-Point Contest

Launching long balls and hearing the ball swish through the net is awesome. Watching professionals launch long balls and hear nothing from the net is even awesomer. Luckily for us, some of the league's best three-point shooters will be competing, unlike the aforementioned contest.

Each of these guys want that title of 'best shooter in the NBA', and these are the players hoping to get that win:

  • Tyrese Haliburton, Indiana Pacers

  • Tyler Herro, Miami Heat

  • Buddy Hield, Indiana Pacers

  • Kevin Huerter, Sacramento Kings

  • Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers

  • Lauri Markkanen, Utah Jazz

  • Julius Randle, New York Knicks

  • Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics

It's amazing the skill that these players have developed over time. The consistency and rhythm it takes to make these shots is definitely worth giving a look at. As we mentioned in yesterday's send, we rooting for the rising star, Kevin Huerter. Put one on for Sac Town Kevin!

The actual All-Star Game

The NBA has done a great job revamping it's all-star game from its previous renditions. Up until a couple of seasons ago, it was mostly guys chucking up threes and throwing easy lobs to each other. Now, with the implementation of the 'Final Target Score' (a certain set score after the 3rd quarter that, once reached, ends the game), each team is never out of the game.

In another fun twist, the NBA is putting on a live-draft before the game to determine the final rosters for Team Lebron and Team Giannis. Here's the rosters so far, along with the player pool for each team to choose from:

Now I know these are all professional athletes, but someone still has to be picked last right? Super awkward if you ask me. My pick for the last pick in the all-star draft: Jaren Jackson Jr. No particular reason - just a feeling.

XFL Kickoff

You thought football was over??

The XFL is launching on Saturday, February 18th for the 3nd time after shutting down back in 2001 and 2020. This time, eight new-ish teams will compete in a 10 game regular season with two rounds of playoffs to decide the champion. Want to get more familiar with the teams? I got you!

via XFL.com

The XFL will feel mostly like traditional football, but it's rumored that like baseball's minor league system, the XFL will test different rules for potential future use in the big league. Some of the rules that are a bit different are:

  • Tiered extra points: Teams will get 1 point from the 2 yard line, 2 points from the 5 yard line, and 3 points from the 10 yard line.

  • Double forward pass: As long as the first forward pass is completed behind the line of scrimmage, a second forward pass may be attempted.

  • Rounds of overtime: Each team will have three alternating attempts from the 5 yard line worth 2 points each. The team with the most points at the end of three rounds wins. If it's still tied, it goes to sudden death until one team does not convert.

Nothing too crazy, but enough to keep fans on their toes.

Unlike other leagues, the XFL has quite a few notable names that will take to the field for XFL teams including:

  • WR Josh Gordon

  • P Marquette King

  • QB Paxton Lynch

  • WR Martavis Bryant

  • LB Vic Beasley

  • QB Ben Dinucci

Hopefully the third time will be the charm for this league, but for now, let's just enjoy the ride while we can. Oh, and if you were wondering if this would be the last time hearing of the XFL from us, expect to see XFL updates in the future!

Genesis Invitational Final Rounds

Irish Mirror

The featured group above shot a combined -9 yesterday with the most impressive of the bunch being none other than Tiger Woods finishing his round with three birdies to put himself at -2. It was fun to see these friends interact in a competitive environment, and even seeing some trash talk on the course.

As you know, leaderboards can change in an instant if guys get hot, and especially if they get cold. Here is the current top 5 as it stands:

Like I said, these tournaments can change in a matter of holes, and with Riveria Country Club having a reputation for grinding players out, expect to see some shifting in the leaderboard throughout the weekend.

Bleacher Report

Kevin Love is the last member from the Cavaliers championship team still with the team currently, but it's likely he will be moved in the coming days.

Love, who has spent the past 9 seasons with Cleveland, has garnered lots of well, love, from the fans over the years. He was part of the greatest teams Clevelands has ever had, including that 2016 group that made history after coming back from a 3-1 series deficit to the Golden State Warriors.

He has truly been an inspiration to fans, as you can see, both on and off the court. Wherever Kevin ends up next, I'm sure all of Cleveland will be there to cheer him on.

🀍 Wholesome Content πŸ€

Little League sports are some of the most entertaining games you'll ever see.

Coaches trying to manage all the little kids out on the baseball field. Parents screaming and cheering for the smallest of victories. All the shenanigans kids will try to pull (whether they realize it or not). But sometimes, some things are bigger than sports, like giving your friend a hug:

This kid's emotional maturity is off the charts. With moments like this, you just can't help but smile at the lack of awareness on the field and the innocence of kids. Just precious.

πŸ’° The Cover Corner πŸ’°

About last night: In gambling, you gotta take your medicine when it’s given to you. I backed the second best hockey team in the NHL since January, and lost. I backed a team that let off the gas a bit late in the game, and allowed a cover. These things can happen on both sides, but it stings a bit more when you're on the losing side. But like I say, you’re only as good as your next bet. Let's get on with it.

πŸ€ CBB: Sienna ML-160 and -3.5 vs. Quinnipiac

I can’t quit them, and you can’t make me. I ride with the Sienna Saints, and I die with the Sienna Saints. Quinnipiac is 8-0 ATS as an underdog, but I say the train stops here. Give me the Saints again. Money-line or Spread. Or Both.

πŸ’ NHL: Dallas -110 ML @ Minnesota

Be advised, this is a homer bet. I love the Stars more than anything, but that isn't blinding me from the fact that the Stars are a better team coming off of two loses against the two best teams in the East. This line is deflated because of that, and I’ll take my Stars all the way to the moon.

As per usual, do what you must with this valuable information.

🐣 Tweet of the Day 🐣

I'll admit it, I dropped the ball on this not being featured for Throwback Thursday.

The legendary Happy Gilmore won his first golf jacket 27 years ago in what was one of the greatest golf tournaments ever captured on film. Shooter 'notes app'ed' the Twitter world to plead his case for why he should have won.

In all honesty, I'm glad we got to reminisce on the greatness of Adam Sandler and one of his best movies he's been in. I guess I know what I'm watching later tonight.
