Hit the Road, Jack

+ conferences are realigning...again...

Good morning everyone! Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:

🏈 Hitting the Road

🚚 More Movement

🚀 ...and much more! Let's get into it.

👑 Main Character

Isaiah Simmons woke up yesterday to find out he needed to head to Zillow after the Cardinals traded him to the New York Giants. The cost? A 2024 7th round pick.

Going into his fourth year in the NFL, Simmons had started to distinguish himself as one of ‘the guys’ on Arizona’s defense, but clearly, the organization has other plans. A seventh round pick for a guy the Giants know can, and likely will, perform at a high level is the steal of all steals.

AZ is clearly now in full tank mode for the #1 pick in next year’s draft.

  • Kyler Murray, the former #1 overall pick, will miss a considerable amount of the season after suffering a torn ACL last year.

  • WR1 Marquise Brown looks to be struggling in camp, and the next best option for Colt McCoy will be 32 year-old Zach Ertz

  • Budda Baker becomes by far and away the best defensive player on the team, but they might give up 28+ points per game…just take a look at their projected depth chart

If you’re a Cardinals fan this season, it might be a good idea to find a temporary team of the future to root for because it’s going to be brutal out there. Luckily for Simmons, he’ll have a chance to compete in the NFC East that, in just a few short years, has gone from one of the league’s worst, to one of the NFL’s most competitive.

🗞️ In Other News…

Conference realignment is back in the news.

The ACC will be (again) seriously considering adding in three new teams, the same culprits from before.

  • Stanford

  • California

  • SMU

Essentially, a who’s who of wealth in their respective regions. A large majority of the decision will indeed come down to the financial models to see if it would even make sense for the conference to add them, with each bringing major financial concessions to the table.

The ACC has to achieve 12 ‘yeses’ out of 15 to approve the move, and last time, North Carolina, NC State, Clemson, and Florida State were the ones to reject the schools from joining. Maybe things will be different this time ‘round.

The NFL’s final week of the preseason kicked off last night, and for many bubble players, meant that this will be the last opportunity for them to show what they can bring to the team.

While scores and records rarely indicate what’s to come in the future, getting shutout at home is never a good look. In this case, the Steelers whopped up on the Falcons 27-0 to finish undefeated heading into real life football.

The Colts, amidst their drama with their star running back, put up a win against the reigning Super Bowl runner-ups with a 27-13 victory. I don’t know what it is about Anthony Richardson, but something from his outing makes me think I’m really going to like the guy…

Tomorrow is the day we’ve all waited for. Witnessing the return of football is quite the experience, and although it will be slim pickings for star power, at the end of the day, football is football.

Mr. Covers is patiently awaiting the results from his first four CFB bets of the season. A strong start means momentum and confidence heading into the meat of the season. Come up short, and fighting back could be an uphill battle.
