Happy Tiersday
+ DPOY got paid and Mr. Covers gives out his first Sunday NFL picks
Good morning everyone, and WELCOME BACK TO NFL FOOTBALL SEASON. We simply could not be more excited to bring you all the news around America’s favorite sport for the next 6+ months.
Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:
🏈 Happy Tiersday
💰️ Dude Got Paid
🚀 ...and much more!
Let's get into it.
👑 Main Character
Before I say anything else, let me say this: football is back.
Thursday Night Football will ring in the 2023 NFL season with tonight’s game between the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs and the ultra-hyped up Detroit Lions.
📺️ How to watch tonight’s TNF game (you’ll never guess who’s site that link will take you to)
Today, to get prepared for the long season that is the NFL, let us take this section to provide you some insight of what Mr. Covers and I are calling ‘Tiers-day’
Tiers-day (which will happen on Tuesday’s going forward) will be Snagged Sports’ official rankings of each NFL team from week to week. Think of it as our version of college football’s CFP Rankings, except we do all the teams, every week.
Will there be overreactions? Certainly. Will it be the most correct source of rankings you can find? Probably. So without further adieu, here is the Week 1 edition of Tiers-day:
Mr. Editor’s Official Tiers
Mr. Covers’ Official Tiers
As you can see, we are not perfectly aligned, which in this case is probably a good thing. Nobody likes when everyone agrees on everything in sports - it’s no fun - but these were made independent of the other and ensures disagreement on both ends.
As you can see, based off these official tiers, tonight’s matchup will already have serious implications for next Tiersday. Going forward, it will be interesting to see how Week 1’s rankings compare to the weeks ahead.
🗞️ In Other News…
CHA-CHING
That was the noise heard ‘round San Francisco after 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa received his market-altering contract just in time for the start of the season. The 49ers gave Bosa a 5-year, $170 million dollar contract with $122.5 million of it fully guaranteed. It makes him the highest paid defensive player in the history of the NFL. If there wasn’t indication that NFL owners needed to start getting out their checkbooks for top end talent, surely now they will understand.
This whole “Caleb Williams not entering the draft” thing is starting to get weird…
Williams’ dad has said, again, that if a team with the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft is not in alignment with what he and his son want, then he would likely return to USC for another year. Wanting to get into an optimal situation in the draft isn’t anything new (see Eli Manning), but turning down generational wealth for ‘team-fit’ is preposterous. Caleb Williams is entering the draft next year, 1,000,000%. You heard it here first.
Being on the Colorado’s side of the hype is one thing, but taking a peak at the other side that is TCU’s embarrassing loss is completely different. The university shocked the nation last year by making it all the way to the CFP title game, but TCU linebacker Johnny Hodges isn’t satisfied with that, or how the season started this year.
💰 Mr. Covers’ Corner
🟡 Lions vs. Chiefs O 54.5 total points
🟡 Lions +6
Thursday’s Picks
🏈 NFL: Titans +3 vs. Saints
I am doing my best to withhold from making a “Game of the Year” bet in Week 1, but boy do I love the Titans in this spot.
Mike Vrabel finds ways to grit and grind out wins when he is not expected to win, and Dennis Allen finds ways to lose games he should win. Vrabel is the hungriest of hungry dogs against the spread (ATS) as the Titans are 23-15-1 ATS during his tenure, including 22-9-1 when the spread is 3 points or higher. Dennis Allen is 4-8 ATS as a favorite but is 7-5 SU, so if they win, they win ugly.
Believe it or not, Derek Carr may only be as good as Ryan Tannehill. Given it being the first game for Carr in the Saints’ system and how underrated the Titan's defense is, I love Tennessee in this spot.
🏈 NFL: Panthers vs. Falcons U 39.5 total points
I don't have a lot of statistics to necessarily back this up as I do with other picks, but I have plenty of logic.
Logic #1: Frank Reich is a bad head coach.
Logic #2: The Falcons will be running the ball a lot, thus running the clock down faster, thus less time to score points.
Logic #3: Bryce Young is a rookie and Desmond Ritter has started 4 regular season games. That should lead to bad offense.
Logic #4: Both of these teams have underrated defenses.
Overall, I think this will be a game for sickos and degenerates, and with that, I will be enjoying it in its entirety.
Going Forward
As a reminder, here is the format for the NFL this year will be as follows:
Monday I will talk about the weekend games and give out picks for MNF.
Tuesday I will talk about MNF and what games I'm looking at for the entire week.
Wednesday will be the same in terms of what games I LIKE but not necessarily games I have placed wagers on (when I place a wager, y'all will know).
Thursday I will be giving any official TNF picks that I haven't given out already.
Friday will be final picks for the weekend and will include college football as well.
Get it? Got it? Good.
🎒CFB season record: 5-5-0
⭐️ NFL season record: 0-0-0
