Golf is Back in Full Swing

Breaking down the latest and greatest Netflix sports doc, living vicariously through Kansas City, and much more

Welcome back to another edition of Snagged Sports, where we ✨snag✨ all the best stories in sports and serve them to you on a screen near you. In today's edition, the newest golf doc just hit Netflix, the Chiefs paraded through Kansas City, and a fired up @careercovers. Let's get into it.

🏆 The Main Character: Full Swing

Netflix

Netflix's newest sports doc just dropped. Full Swing hit the streaming platform yesterday with 8 episodes that will follow the Tour's best golfers. Today, I will be doing something a little different and give my personal review of how episode 1 went down, and what we can expect to see for the rest of the series.

The Life of a PGA Golfer

How awesome is it to be a professional golfer? That was my first thought through the first 5 minutes of the episode. Flying around on private jets, practicing and playing golf as a literal job, and getting paid millions (if you're good) to hang out with your friends and move a little white ball around a field.

Yes, that last point was a little too simplified, but it doesn't mean it isn't true. In all reality, these guys are ultra competitive athletes at the top of their game. Millions of people play the game of golf, and very few achieve what the episodes two main characters, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, have accomplished. Man, what a life they live.

"Frenemies"

The title for this episode was a bit dramatic I thought.

Thomas and Spieth have a great story; from growing up playing together when they were in middle and high school, to being each other's best men in their weddings and competing for major championships in the PGA Tour. They have been with each other for seemingly their entire lives, so to call them 'frenemies' is a bit of a stretch in my eyes.

Yahoo Sports

Where it does make a bit of sense is when Justin talks through his life in golf compared to Jordan. The narrative the viewer is lead through is this: JT has always been second fiddle to Jordan his whole life. Jordan won more tournaments as a kid. He became a pro before he did. He won majors before he did, and Justin was thought of for a long time as Jordan's friend.

Coming out from behind that shadow wasn't easy, but JT eventually breaks through and has made it more of a level playing field for the two of them. Nevertheless, it was an interesting storyline, but just a bit overdone with the rivalry of the relationship in my opinion. A better name for the episode would have been 'Competi-friends' (like competitive? Eh I tried).

Final Thoughts

The fun thing about this series is as a fan of golf, you already know the outcome of each of the tournaments. Netflix started following the PGA in 2022 right at the beginning of the season, so it's super interesting to see more of the dynamics and routines of a player's process, and how they prepare for such a big moment rather than just focusing on the events themselves.

If you don't follow golf, I won't spoil the episode for you, but for future reference, you can easily look up what happened and still have a love and appreciation for what these producers are giving the viewers access to.

My official rating of Full Swing on a scale from 1-10: 8.7. I love a good, wholesome friendship story, and the story is very well told. It isn't higher because I'm expecting some FIREWORKS when LIV Golf and the drama behind that is introduced into the fold of things. Good stuff so far, and would highly recommend this series (after one episode) to any sports fan.

After serving out his 2021 and 2022 suspension for illegally betting on football games, wide receiver Calvin Ridley is now eligible to petition for reinstatement into the NFL.

Ridley, who was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars during the middle of the 2022 season, has not played a snap of football in what will be almost two years. Before he was suspended, Ridley was coming off of a monster 2020 season where he had 90 receptions for 1,374 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was to be the successor to a declining Julio Jones until the news of his gambling on games were revealed.

He has not been officially reinstated as of yet, but it's inevitable that he will return before the 2023 season begins. Watch out for those Jags down in Florida, because that explosive wide receiving corp, paired with a rising young quarterback, is a recipe for success.

💰 The Cover Corner 💰

About last night: A lot of people like to say “I don’t want to tell you I told you so but..”

I love it. I love being right. The sharps were all over Indiana, big money was all over Indiana, everyone on Twitter was all over Indiana, but your old pal Covers told you to take Northwestern. They even gave me an additional point just so I could be even more right. I sit here and can confidently say: being right feels very good.

Oh yeah, and San Antonio and Charlotte both suck and can’t score. Nothing new. 2-0 son.

🏀 CBB: Saint Mary’s -13.5 vs. San Diego

I LOVE the Gaels this year. I can’t get enough of them. They are so solid defensively, and San Diego is garbage on offense with no real playmakers on their roster. Saint Mary’s won by 27 at home the last time these two teams played, and they are 6-3 on the road ATS. The Aztecs are 5-9 at home ATS. Saint Mary’s is better and will be more than able to handle San Diego.

🏒 NHL: NJ Devils -155 vs. St. Louis

Yes, yes, I know the Blues offense showed up against the Panthers earlier this week, but again I tell you, this line is inflated and St. Louis is NOT GOOD. Don’t overthink this one and take New Jersey here.

As per usual, do what you must with this valuable information.

🐣 Tweet of the Day 🐣

"In our rebuilding year, we're world champs."

The Chiefs celebrated their way through Kansas City for their Super Bowl parade, and thousands upon thousands of Chiefs fans showed out. The offensive line wasn't afraid to show the world some new merch. 0 sacks. They put it on a t-shirt.
