All The Football

+ a new section in honor of our newsletter's namesake

Good morning everyone! This is officially the last time Snagged Sports will say this, so here it goes…

FOOTBALL. IS. BACK.

Ok, now that that is finally out of the system, let’s get into the first full edition of what Snagged Sports will look like for the next six months or so. This is going to be a long one, but after this first week, there will be less explaining about each section and more doing.

Here's what news we ✨snagged✨ for you around the world of football today:

🏈 All The Football
👋 Sunday Snag
🚀 ...and much more!

Let's get into it.

👑 NFL Game Recaps

Each week, we will cover the top three games of the Sunday slate. If your team does not get included, maybe if they are good (or bad) enough the next week they will get featured. This will be the most unbiased Snagged will ever be, but just warning, if the Cowboys have more games like they did last night, Snagged Sports might become the most biased newsletter you have ever laid your eyes on.

Without further adieu, like we already said, let’s get into it.

Best of the Best

Final: Dolphins 36 - Chargers 34

This game had all the points. Miami wasted no time in getting right back into the flow of their offense, and boy did it show. Tua’s season debut was a good one - 466 yards passing, three TDs and one measly interception. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill received 50% of the passing yards estate, racking up 215 receiving yards and two touchdowns, one of them being the game winner. If you were wondering, that puts Hill on pace for 3,655 yards this season.

On the other sideline, Justin Herbert and the Chargers played a solid game. Austin Ekeler flashed his star power with 164 all-purpose yards and a touchdown, while his backup, Joshua Kelley, nearly crossed the 100 yard mark himself.

If you couldn’t tell, there was little defense to be had, but when it mattered most, the Dolphins stepped up on the last drive of the game to force a 4-and-out to give Miami the win on the road. Welcome back Chargers, we can’t wait to see at least 5 more games like this one from you guys this season.

Sneaky Fun

Final: Eagles 25 - Patriots 20

In a game that many did not expect to be close saw the Patriots have not one, but two chances to make a game-winning drive down the field to steal a win from the Super Bowl LVII runner-ups. Spoiler alert: it was not meant to be.

In a rainy one in New England, Mac Jones stepped up, out performing Jalen Hurts 361/3/1 to 170/1/0. Kendrick Bourne and Hunter Henry (more on him later) produced the team’s touchdowns. Ezekiel Elliott, in his debut with his new team, coughed up a crucial fumble deep in Eagles territory in what you could say led to the team’s loss.

The Eagles didn’t really do anything all that special all day. They were efficient, they didn’t make many mistakes, but their biggest performers on the day were wideout duo AJ Brown and Devonta Smith who each hauled in seven catches for a combined 126 yards.

All-in-all, the Eagles will be fine, and the defense played like they know they can. With a little more reps, they should return to the dominate force that everyone grew used to last season. As for the Pats, a lot of good came from their new OC, and if that isn’t good enough for you, just close your eyes and think about the Brady days - they weren’t all that long ago.

Rain can make for good games, and in the case of our final recap of the day, it can make for sloppy, ugly, one-sided games too.

The Dud

Final: Cowboys 40 - Giants 0

Yowza, what a snoozer of a game.

The last game of an eventful Sunday NFL slate featured old rivals who were both out to prove that they could take a step forward this year - not only for the division, but for a Super Bowl. The Cowboys took that massive step forward, and the Giants took probably 30 steps backward.

It was an ugly showing from the start. The Cowboys defense, who was absolutely dominant, pitched a shutout on the night. They accounted for two touchdowns, two interceptions, one forced fumble, seven sacks, and a blocked field goal. Oh, and they held the Giants to zero, ahem, ZERO points.

Neither offense was able to really get anything going, but Dallas’ rushing attack proved to work the best on the night thanks to Tony Pollard’s two touchdowns and Kavontae Turpin’s rushing score. As for the Giants, you would really have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find something good to say, so here it goes: Daniel Jones completed more passes than Dak Prescott (but still threw for 40 yards less). Ok there, we tried.

If the Cowboys defense plays like this each week, America’s Team really could be a top contender for the Lombardi Trophy. It’s not realistic to think they can do it every week, but some version of it would mean a top defense of this century is in the works.

Note: Here at Snagged Sports, we’re determined to make this thing become the next big newsletter in the space. Share with friends and family to ensure you get them to subscribe to the best football newsletter in America.

📚️ College Football’s Best of the Best

Final: #11 Texas 34 - #3 Alabama 24

Texas is back, y’all.

UT went into Bryant Denny Stadium Saturday night and handed Alabama their first home loss by double-digits since 2004. Yes, you read that right. Quinn Ewers finally showed the world why he was such a highly touted recruit with his 349 yards through the air and three touchdowns. The offense was balanced, the defense didn’t freak out, and most importantly, a team that is widely known for collapses down the stretch held, and extended, a fourth quarter lead.

Alabama didn’t necessarily do anything wrong, but their inability to get to Ewers and protect their own quarterback was the straw that broke the Tide’s back. Jalen Milroe had an ok game, tossing two touchdowns on 255 air yards, but the ground game could not get going, and taking five sacks on the night didn’t help their cause either.

No matter how you look at it, Texas deserved to win that game, and they were rewarded nicely with a Top 4 spot in the most recent AP Poll. If you remember though, Texas did this same thing (or something similar) last year around this time, and finished third in the Big 12 with an 8-5 record. They’re back, but they’ll have to prove they can keep up this pace to truly truly be back.

👐 Sunday Snag

Snagged Sports name was born thanks to OBJ’s infamous one-handed grab against the Cowboys on SNF many moons ago, and because of that, each week we will honor the best ‘Sunday Snag’ across the NFL. At the end of the season, each snag will be put to a vote in a separate send to award the best Sunday Snag of the Year (SSOTY if you will). Gonna be good stuff.

Who would have thought the first Sunday Snag would go to Patriots tight end Hunter Henry?

The former Razorback hauled in a clutch one-handed tip drill of a catch to convert on a fourth down for his team. Unfortunately, the game ended in a loss, but someone tell Hunter that he’s officially the first Sunday Snag of all-time. We’re sure he would be honored.

💰 Mr. Covers’ Corner

✅ Titans +3 vs. Saints

✅ Panthers vs. Falcons U 39.5 total points

✅ Dolphins vs. Chargers O 51 total points

❌ Alabama -7 vs. Texas

About this weekend…

We will absolutely take a 3-0 from the NFL this weekend, no complaints here.

My biggest failure was on the Alabama spread, but at the same time, Texas is so back (like I have previously stated). They looked good on both sides of the ball, and Quinn Ewers was actually hitting his middle and deep targets. Everything we were hearing from fall camp was that this was a "classic Saban team" and they were anything but. They are allowing far too much pressure on the QB, and in turn, Milroe has zero time to do anything.

Texas is officially back, and the haters are sick.

Overall, 4-1 to start the NFL season is a great way to start. Let's keep the momentum going today on Monday Night Football.

Monday’s Picks

🏈 NFL: Jets +2 vs. Bills & Under 45.5 total points

I feel like the Jets’ defense has been severely overshadowed by the Aaron Rodgers signing this year.

Buffalo will be without Von Miller, but last year this game went under this exact number both times these teams square off against each other. I love the Jets here more than I love the under though. Rodgers is now behind center with plenty of weapons at his disposal.

My only worry for the Jets is if their offensive line can hold up - which will be the question all season long. I think the biggest factor as to what will propel the Jets is how much their defensive line will disrupt Josh Allen and the Buffalo offense. Back the Jets this week, then do the smart thing and fade them next week.

🎒CFB season record: 5-6-0

⭐️ NFL season record: 4-1-0

🪄 Studs N’ Duds

With Week 1 of the NFL comes Week 1 of every fantasy football league in America.

Each week, Snagged will keep you updated on the league’s top performing players, and most disappointing players (relative to the amount of people used them in their starting rosters). The points are based off of point-per-reception scoring - if you don’t use that type of scoring, you should probably switch. It’s the best around, so if you are one of the few that doesn’t use PPR, I hope you can find it within yourself to play nice and deal with it.

This week was heavy on the Dolphins for one side, and heavy on the Bengals on the other. Based on how this Sunday went, it shouldn’t be hard to guess which team was slotted in this week’s Studs N’ Duds.

Studs

  1. 44.5: WR Tyreek Hill

  2. 32.9: WR Brandon Aiyuk

  3. 29.1: WR Jakobi Meyers

  4. 27.1: QB Tua Tagovailoa

  5. 26.7: RB Aaron Jones

Duds

  1. 6.6: QB Lamar Jackson

  2. 5.3: RB Najee Harris

  3. 3.2: QB Joe Burrow

  4. 0.0: WR Tee Higgins

  5. 0.0: WR Drake London
