🏈 Emotional Rollercoaster
📊 Happy Tiersday
🚀 ...and much more!
Let's get into it.
👑 MNF Recap
It was the best of times. It was the worst (case scenario) of times. But in the end, the Jets came away with a tone setting win in overtime against their division rivals, the Buffalo Bills.
There’s so much to cover from this game, but let’s start with the obvious story of the night.
Aaron Rodgers
The emotions during the intros as the Jets’ newest QB took to the field with American flag in hand to honor those who lost their lives in 9/11 were high, and will go down as one of the best, most goosebump-inducing, moments of the year. Unfortunately for Jets fans, the emotional high would only last as long as that moment.
On the fourth snap of Aaron Rodgers’ New York career, he went down with what has thought to be some sort of ankle injury. Even more unfortunately, after multiple replays were shown, it appears that the Achilles popped and with it, so did Rodgers aspirations for the 2023 NFL season. The injury has yet to be confirmed, but all signs are pointing to the season-ending injury.
The rest of the night meant Josh Allen and backup quarterback, the 2021 second overall pick and last year’s starter (sort of), Zach Wilson would square off for the night to see who would take the advantage in the AFC East.
QB Duel
A quick look at the stats for each of last night’s quarterbacks:
Josh Allen: 236 yards passing, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 36 yards rushing
Zach Wilson: 140 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT, 6 yards rushing
The Jets had to change their game plan on the fly last night, and yet these two stat lines are pretty comparable. When do we start to talk about Josh Allen’s inability to get the job done? Last night, he committed four turnovers, leading to his league high 84 turnovers since 2018, the year he was drafted.
One, maybe two, of those turnovers can be chalked up to facing a fantastic defensive effort from the Jets, but having four in one game and going on to lose in overtime usually means that the game was winnable. The game was thrown away (literally) by Madden 24’s cover athlete. Toss in the fact that Allen has never won an overtime game in his career (0-5 all-time), and it may be time to wonder if #17 is really the guy.
The Most Wholesome of Endings
Given the circumstances of the entire game, no one expected these two teams to be in a position to go into overtime, but football has a funny way of creating these storybook endings.
For once, the Bills won the coin toss, but were unable to do anything useful with their first, and only, possession of the period. They decided to punt it away to Xavier Gipson - a man who made the roster on deadline day in one of the cooler moments from this season’s Hard Knocks. In a moment of destiny, Gipson, the undrafted rookie out of Stephen F. Austin, took the punt and after some bobbing and weaving, returned it 65 yards to walk it off for the Jets.
And that folks, is why football is the best game of all time. In a game that started with such sorrow and dread for not only Jets fans, but many NFL fans, ended with one of the best moments from Week 1’s slate. It doesn’t get much better than that.

👐 Monday Snag
Was there any question on what the Monday Snag would be from last night’s game?
Garrett Wilson was quiet for the majority of the game due to the Jets’ unexpected change at QB, but boy did 2022’s Offensive Rookie of the Year come up big when a big play was needed. This is probably the catch of Week 1 in the NFL, but it’ll be up to you to decide if it will ultimately be the best catch of the season.
💰 Mr. Covers’ Corner
✅ Jets +2 vs. Bills
✅ Jets vs. Bills U 45.5 total points
About last night…
I want to start this off by saying you're welcome for not feeding you more of the Jets’ Kool-Aid this offseason; I just had a feeling.
At the moment of writing this, it is not immediately known the extent of the Aaron Rodgers injury. From what we all saw, it did not look good. The under was one of the easiest winners I have ever given out and was never worried for a second (was worried for the game’s last 5 minutes).
Tuesday’s Picks
🏈 NFL: Niners vs. Rams O 44.5 total points
Both of these offenses looked really good against teams that have solid defenses in Week 1 as they combined for 60 points. Obviously, it isn’t expected that they won't hit that number again, but I think this will get into the 50's pretty easily. Although the Niners have arguably the best defense in the league, they will still give up scores. More importantly, their offense will be scoring plenty of points.
Although sweat potential is definitely in play, I think we will get there.
🏈 CFB: Penn State vs. Illinois O 48 total points
What are we doing here? Is this a trap? It might be a trap, but there is only one way to find out.
Both of these teams have sailed over this number in both of their games. The Penn State offense looks very good - easily the best offense they have had in some time. Points will be flowing on that side of this matchup. Illinois has scored 23+ in both games this season. Based on my models, I project them getting at least 17, and I project Penn State over 34 points. Given Penn State's ability to score points (63 and 38), there is plenty of room beyond that 34 number. The bail-out play here is on the over for Penn State's team total which should be out in the coming days. Either way, enjoy this shootout.
